What we learned about DOCUMENTATION

We ran exploratory research with software teams to understand what documentation really costs them: in time, in money, and in missed opportunity. Two things became clear.

Two things became CLEAR

Why you need it

  • Fast onboarding and ramp-up
  • Fewer support and second-line tickets
  • Confident, well-understood releases
  • Less dependency on key people

But done manually

  • It goes stale and new hires learn the wrong thing
  • Docs lag the product, so support fills the gap
  • It's never updated in time for the release
  • It lives in people's heads, not on the page

Why documentation is a MUST

Skip it, and the cost shows up everywhere: in your teams, your system, and your revenue.

01

Operational efficiency within IT

Knowledge loss, poor cross-team collaboration, back-and-forth clarifications, dependency on key individuals, high second-line support.

02

Unstable system

Unknown edge cases, incomplete technical analysis, higher bugs and defects rate.

03

Operational inefficiency within business

Slower onboarding and trial drop-offs, under-adoption of new features, higher churn rate, slow ticket response.

It adds up to less innovation, higher operational costs, revenue loss and scalability issues.

Why manual upkeep BREAKS IT

Teams know it matters. Doing it by hand is exactly where it falls apart.

Less time than it REALLY NEEDS

Functional and technical employees spend only 3–10% of their time on documentation, yet feel it should be 10–20% to reach the quality and completeness they want. And even that feels like a lot.

The questions land on your DEVELOPERS

When documentation is missing or out of date, the questions land on the people who can least afford the interruption, pulling them away from building.

of developers' time goes to second-line support

Two kinds of cost, TWO SOLUTIONS

The research found costs within IT and within the business. Smartdoxx answers both, from the same knowledge of your code.

Smart Documentation

For the costs within IT: documentation generated from your codebase and kept in sync on every release, so knowledge stops living in people's heads.

  • Fewer second-line questions for developers
  • Less dependency on key people
  • Releases everyone understands
